Kicking Camp Banana is a multi boot utility included with Apple tree Inc.'s macOS (previously Mac Os X / Os X) that assists users in installing Microsoft Windows operating systems on Intel-based Macintosh computers. The utility guides users through non-destructive disk partitioning (including resizing of an existing HFS+ or APFS partition, if necessary) of their hd drive or solid state drive and installation of Windows device drivers for the Apple hardware. The utility likewise installs a Windows Control Panel applet for selecting the default kicking operating arrangement.

Initially introduced as an unsupported beta for Mac Os X 10.iv Tiger, [one] [2] the utility was offset introduced with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and has been included in subsequent versions of the operating system ever since. Previous versions of Boot Military camp supported Windows XP and Windows Vista. Boot Campsite 4.0 for Mac OS X 10.half-dozen Snow Leopard version x.6.6 up to Mac Bone X 10.8 Mountain Lion version 10.8.2 only supported Windows 7. [3] However, with the release of Kicking Campsite five.0 for Mac Bone X 10.eight Mountain Panthera leo in version ten.8.3, only 64-flake versions of Windows 7 and Windows viii are officially supported. [4] [5]

Boot Camp 6.0 added support for 64-flake versions of Windows 10. Kick Camp half dozen.i, available on macOS 10.12 Sierra and later on, will only accept new installations of Windows 7 and subsequently; this requirement was upgraded to requiring Windows 10 for macOS 10.fourteen Mojave.

Boot Campsite is currently not available on Apple silicon Macs, [6] notwithstanding, Craig Federighi has stated that there is technically nothing stopping ARM-based versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 from running on Apple silicon processors; Microsoft would but need to change the licensing policies regarding ARM-based Windows 10 and Windows eleven, for currently only OEMs who pre-install Windows 10 and Windows 11 on their products may buy licenses for information technology – it is not publicly available to consumers like other versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. [7] It is already possible to run ARM-based Windows ten (just Windows Insider builds, as they are the only widely available ARM builds of Windows 10) through the QEMU emulator [8] and Parallels Desktop virtualization software (besides supporting Windows 11 and Linux), [9] furthering Federighi'due south statement. It's currently rumored that Microsoft'due south exclusivity deal with Qualcomm volition expire sometime in early 2022, which would allow Apple and other manufacturers to provide support for Windows on their ARM-based machines if it were not to be renewed.[commendation needed]

Overview [ edit ]

Installation [ edit ]

Setting up Windows 10 on a Mac requires an ISO epitome of Windows ten provided by Microsoft. Boot Camp combines Windows ten with install scripts to load hardware drivers for the targeted Mac computer.

Kicking Military camp currently supports Windows 10 on a range of Macs dated mid-2012 or newer. [x]

Startup Disk [ edit ]

By default, Mac volition always boot from the last-used startup disk. Property downward the option key (⌥) at startup brings upward the boot manager, which allows the user to choose which operating organisation to start the device in. When using a non-Apple keyboard, the alt key normally performs the aforementioned activity. The boot director can too be launched past belongings down the "menu" push button on the Apple Remote at startup.

On older Macs, its functionality relies on BIOS emulation through EFI and a partition table information synchronization machinery between GPT and MBR combined. [eleven]

On newer Macs, Boot Camp keeps the difficult disk as a GPT so that Windows is installed and booted in UEFI style. [12]

Requirements [ edit ]

Mac Os Ten x.7 Lion and Os X 10.viii Mountain King of beasts [ edit ]

Apple's Boot Camp system requirements lists the following requirements for Mac Os Ten Panthera leo and OS 10 Mountain Panthera leo: [13]

  • eightGB USB storage device, or external drive formatted as MS-DOS (Fat) for installation of Windows drivers for Mac hardware
  • twenty GB costless hard disk infinite for a kickoff-time installation or 40 GB for an upgrade from a previous version of Windows
  • A full version of one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows seven Habitation Premium, Professional, or Ultimate (64-bit editions only)
    • Windows eight and Windows 8 Professional (64-bit editions only)
    • Windows 10 Home, Pro, Pro for Workstation, Education or Enterprise (64-bit editions simply)

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and Mac OS Ten 10.6 Snow Leopard [ edit ]

Apple tree lists the post-obit requirements for Mac Bone X x.5 Leopard and Mac OS X ten.6 Snow Leopard: [13]

  • An Intel-based Macintosh computer with the latest firmware (Early Intel-based Macintosh computers crave an EFI firmware update for BIOS compatibility).
  • A Mac Bone 10 10.5 Leopard or Mac Bone 10 10.6 Snow Leopard installation disc or Mac OS Ten Disc 1 included with Macs that have Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard preinstalled; this disc is needed for installation of Windows drivers for Mac hardware
  • x GB costless hard disk space (16 GB is recommended for Windows 7)
  • A full version of 1 of the post-obit operating systems:
    • Windows XP Abode Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack two or higher (32-chip editions only) [fourteen]
    • Windows Vista Home Bones, Domicile Premium, Business, Enterprise or Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit editions) [15]
    • Windows vii Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate (32-bit and 64-fleck editions)

Supported Macintosh computers with Windows 8 [ edit ]

Officially, the earliest Macintosh models that support Windows eight are the mid-2011 MacBook Air, 13-inch-mid-2011 or fifteen and 17-inch-mid-2010 MacBook Pro, mid-2011 Mac Mini, 21-inch-mid-2011 or 27-inch-mid-2010 iMac, and early 2009 Mac Pro. [sixteen] [17] By running the Kick Camp banana with a compatible version of Microsoft Windows setup disc in the bulldoze and switching to a Windows viii disc when Mac Bone 10 reboots the automobile to begin installing Windows, Windows viii tin exist installed on older unsupported hardware.[ citation needed ] This tin can also work with Windows ten.

Limitations [ edit ]

  • Kicking Campsite will just help the user partition their deejay if they currently take only a principal HFS segmentation, an EFI System Division, and a Mac OS Ten Recovery Partition. Thus, for instance, information technology is non possible to maintain an additional storage segmentation. [xviii] A workaround has been discovered that involves interrupting the standard procedure after creating the Boot Campsite segmentation, resizing the master Mac Os X partition and creating a tertiary sectionalisation in the now available space, and then standing with the Windows install. [19] Changes to the partition table after Windows is installed are officially unsupported, but tin can be achieved with the help of third-party software. [20]
  • Kick Army camp does not assist users install Linux, and does non provide drivers for it. Nearly methods for dual-booting with Linux on Mac rely on manual disk partition, and the use of an EFI kicking manager such as rEFInd. [21]
  • Despite Macs transitioning to Thunderbolt 3 in 2016, Boot Camp does not currently support running Windows with a Thunderbolt three-powered External GPU (eGPU) unit nether macOS High Sierra, macOS Mojave or macOS Catalina. Apple has not publicly commented on why this limitation is in place. [22]
